Harvest Farm - Fall Festival Oct 2-31 2015

It is that time of year again! Colorado leaves are changing into golden hues, crunching underfoot and the days are finally cooling enough for boots and sweaters. My favorite time of year, this year my family is doing something different for our Pumpkin picking.

I heard about a new place called Harvest Farms.. Proceeds from the festival directly support the New Life Program at Harvest Farm. An outreach of Denver Rescue Mission, Harvest Farm is a 209-acre rehabilitation program in Wellington, CO. The Farm accommodates up to 72 men recovering from chronic homelessness and addiction and helps return them to society as productive, self-sufficient citizens.

I spoke with the Stacy Parker (PR Coordinator) of the Denver Rescue Mission with a few questions about the Farm:

* How are the men chosen to be part of this program? We have chaplains and case managers at Harvest Farm who go through an intensive process selecting the men. Currently, we have 72 men in the program and they come from all over -- the prison system, homeless shelters, other rehab facilities, etc. They have to be serious and committed to the program in order to join. We also conduct regular Urinary Analysis and Blood Alcohol tests to ensure our participants are committed to staying sober.

* How long do they stay on the farm? Is it a year long commitment? Just during planting season? Do they live there during that time? Our rehab program is an up to 2 year life change. It’s not just a quick fix for past life mistakes or drug addictions or homelessness, it takes time to get to the core issues before change can happen. During their time at Harvest Farm, we look at developing the whole person through education, Christian counseling, case management and work therapy, which involves working on our farm.

* What is the success rate of the program? We celebrate graduations from our program on a continual basis. The goal at the end of the program is for each individual to be addiction-free and have the tools necessary to achieve lifelong self-sufficiency.

* Are there minimum and maximum ages for this? Men must be at least 18 years of age.

Mile High Farms - Halloween 2014

Mile High Farms is hometown kind of Pumpkin Patch. I have been to almost all of the local pumpkin patches with my family and when it comes to one for the kids, it’s Mile High Farms.

There so many things to do with kids. They have a find the gnome game, A tire swing, petting zoo, maze, hay ride and so much more, the owners change it every year and update it to keep us coming back to see how it’s improved. If you haven’t been and had the chance to see the permanent houses, then you haven’t lived in a child’s imagination in a while.

Some tips when you go.

·        Wear good shoes, the parking lot is sandy and the pumpkin patch has large stickers that will leave decent sized holes in the soles of your shoes. You have been warned.

·        Bring some kind of work glove if you have them. Shove them in your bag and bring them out when it’s time to carry the pumpkins to the hay ride trailer.

·        Dress in layers. Some days it starts off cold but when you start winding through the ever changing maze, you will get warm.

Try and find the owner, he always has his face covered in photos, but sometimes you will catch a glimpse of him sitting and resting while you are getting ready to pay for your amazing pumpkins.


This year, my kids needed pumpkins for their school library’s “Decorate a pumpkin like your favorite book”. These are the choices they made and these pumpkins started their life in the lovely fields of Mile High Farms!

Mile High Farms - Family Fun this Fall

Every year my family and I head to our favorite cornfield maze, pumpkin patch, fun day out with the kids. This year we even dragged along our 19 year old daughter for the fun.

We love going to Mile High Farms and plan on heading out again next year for more adventures.
