Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday.

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that they take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

My question is:

What holiday traditions have you started (or will start) with your family?

Started with my family growing up:

*Pumpkin bread and Grasshopper pie
*Charlie Brown movies

Then I started some of my own:

*Yule celebrations
*Oranges, lemons, limes and cloves
*Cutting down the Christmas tree (Started doing that with Dave last year)
*Hot cocoa with milk and peppermint

Some I'd like to start:

*First snow fudge (I want to make fudge on that first snow. Why not?)
*Cookie cans (I'd like to send cans of homemade cookies to family and friends just like my grandma used to do)

I am 36 years old. I have had two mammograms in my lifetime. Both times they found a mass.

The first one was solved by a biopsy which came back benign. The second, only a sonogram was needed.

My grandmother died in her mid – 30’s from breast cancer, leaving behind three small children. That death spiraled into, an evil step-mother, my mother becoming a young mother and me/my brother ending up into foster care and eventually adopted by loving families.

One person’s death threw an entire family onto a path that no one expected and that death was caused by something that has an option for early detection.

Mammograms: Self Checks: Anything a woman can do to find out in advance in the hopes to save their life; they should have the right/option to. I think that mammograms should be offered at 35 for all women; however the age of 40 for women who have no history is a compromise that I am willing to make.

Self Breast examinations are FREE! They cost nothing but a little time. How can that be harmful? Because you might stress a little when you go to your doctor and say, “I feel something abnormal”. Isn’t that better than hearing the words, “We found cancer, and it’s too far along to do anything about?” How DARE this group come along and try to tell people that the examinations are non-productive? Yes, we might not know there is something there just by the feel of our fingers, but at least we are doing something. At least we are in control of OUR lives and OUR bodies.

“The report on their findings was published in the Nov. 17 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

The report concludes that mammograms reduce the breast cancer death rate by 15 percent. However, this benefit must be balanced against the potential harm or risk. The New York TImes reports that the risk of harm is too great for women 40-49 to make the test beneficial for that age cohort:

Those [potential] harms loom larger for women in their 40s, who are 60 percent more likely to experience them than women 50 and older but are less likely to have breast cancer, skewing the risk-benefit equation. The task force concluded that one cancer death is prevented for every 1,904 women age 40 to 49 who are screened for 10 years, compared with one death for every 1,339 women age 50 to 74, and one death for every 377 women age 60 to 69.

For women over 49 the report recommends that mammograms only be done every second year rather than annually.

The Times notes that a false positive can create extreme anxiety and lead to other intrusive and ultimately unnecessary procedures such as biopsies. It also states, "mammograms can find cancers that grow so slowly that they never would be noticed in a woman’s lifetime, resulting in unnecessary treatment." “

Give me the week of anxiety, I’ve already had one biopsy and came out if it with nothing more than an upset stomach from the worrying. Even if the cancer grows slowly and would never be noticed, let ME have the choice on what I want to do with it. Because we never know what will grow slow or fast. I am not willing to put my life in the hands of the cancer; I want to make the choice for ME and MY family.

I want to fight breast cancer with an arsenal of weapons.

It is my body, my kids that will be left without a Mom, my siblings left without a sister.

I will continue to get mammograms every year and continue to get that knot in my stomach every October knowing its coming up. At least I know that I’m putting my best foot forward and taking control of my destiny.

Thank you to the Colorado Breast Cancer doctors, American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Foundation that are continuing to recommend mammograms at the age of 40.

that I hear from a magazine about something I have been waiting for. I am so excited and nervous about this opportunity. It was my Ah-Ha moment...

On my mind...
work is threatening to boil over, I'm holding on by a thread and counting down my last hour.

Noticing that...
Dave and I still have a few more steps to go on learning how to communicate.
Sometimes we miss the mark and have to back petal until we realize where the miscommunication was.

My toddlers are slowly starting to count, stairs, and animals in books, even when I’m counting down to time out. (Yes… it is as frustrating as it sounds.)

Mom's Night Out!!

Today is Wordless Wednesday…

There is nothing wordless about today.

Last night was Mom’s Night out with Mile High Mama’s and Mom it Forward. What a great time that was.

Laura, Chris, Melissa and I all carpooled downtown to Morton’s Steakhouse to meet up with 30 other ladies in a very full bar area. We did manage to chase out all the poor men who were just coming in for an after work drink.

There were iceberg lettuce bites, miniature crab cakes and filet mignon sandwiches.

Yea… they were THAT good.

There was Tweeting at #gno, #millionmoms and it was all sponsored by our favorite ladies at Mile High Mamas, Mom it Forward and Seventh Generation.

We got some great swag from Seventh Generation and the totally fun “fake snow”

On the way home there was a ton of laughing and talking between us ladies. We are looking forward to January’s gathering which will be at the fabulous, lovely Sephora.

We are all so excited we might faint.

Now for a mushy moment, brought to you by… the wonderful and amazing DAVE!

T’was the night before Wednesday and all the kids are down. Only La-La is awake and Kara is banging the keyboard with a frown. The little ones are clean and begged for their beds, the kitchen is a disaster but all are well fed. Here I sit alone in the dark with not a drink in my hand listening to a dog bark. I miss my Lily and Love that she is out. I hope she is safe and having fun while gallivanting about. I Love you and will wait forever if I need.

That is the message I got last night on my Blackberry as we were leaving Morton’s.

it is partly cloudy, a cool autumn wind and a bit of freedom I can’t wait to get a piece of in 3 hours!

about how content I am feeling. I know things will be changing and that there are things out of my control, but I know they can be dealt with.

I am thankful for...

Dave. Without him these trials and tribulations that come up are easier to handle when there are two heads dealing with them. He has become my rock and a great sounding board when I am venting.

the new regime has begun. I just hope that Dave doesn’t hate me at the end of the 2 month quest we are on.

All I want for Christmas - Vision Bedding Bedroom

Dave and I moved in together August 1^st, my kids and I helped with the remodeling of his house so we could get all of us in there. Dave has been in this house for 10-12 years and the master bedroom needs to be redone just as much as the rest of the place.

I got help from Alycia Wicker "The Frugally Posh Interior Designer" on designing the room as I’d like to see it. A Zen Retreat. I’ve taken down the crown molding, taken down the curtains and envisioned the room as it will look when we can get the time/funds to start redecorating.

One thing at a time right?

We turned the clocks back on Sunday.

The girls have been waking up around 5ish thinking it's time to get up.

Into the girls room I went hoping to bribe them into another hour of sleep.

Issa looked up at me with those beautiful eyes and said...

"Mommy... LaLa's feet stink, she needs a diaper change"

Halloween Party!

What a Wonderful Halloween we all had this past weekend!

Dave and I hosted the party at our house this year, and instead of the adult party I usually throw, this one was pointed towards the families.

His parents, his sister Kim and her four children (plus another), as well as my two toddlers were there. (Dan and Gretchen swung by for a little while and a few drinks!)

The menu included:

Mummy Hot dogs

Spider Deviled Eggs (Dave made these!)

Spiderweb Dip

Pizza Fondue

Mommy Crack (I’ve renamed this. )

Dipped Strawberry ghosts

For the pre-teen girls we got them a haunted house to create and a treat to leave a surprise gift on the porch for the owners to find their house “Boo-ed” in the morning.

We filled the bag with lotions, incense, a magnetic notepad, small planting pot and some candy. It was so much fun to watch them drop it on the porch and run away squealing. They have a lot to learn about this; hopefully next year they’ll have new crafty ways to do it!

(Even the best Halloweens have baby girl meltdowns)

The next morning we all had breakfast together. Waffles, bacon and sausage burritos with some Pumpkin Spice Lattes, it was such a lovely weekend.

I hope all of you had a blessed Halloween.

Have you Boo-ed anyone lately?

Do you have a neighbor that's quiet? Always smiling however obviously lonely and in need of a an uplifting deed?

Do you like surprising people?

I LOVE it.. I love know that I've done something to help someone feel good, even if they don't know it's me.

So when I heard about the "I've been Boo-ed" idea, I fell in love.

This Saturday, I am going to gather the older children up, have them decorate a bag, fill it with treats and a sweet gift and attach this sign to it. Then, leave it on the step of a neighbor lady who always seems so lonely when I see her.

Want to follow suit? Please do, leave something on the desk of a co-worker who needs a smile, or at the hospital for a nurse working late or for a child who might need an uplifting thought.

I was rushing around my room cleaning up and trying to get some chores done. I had CNN on in the background and was listening about a bombing in Iraq.

LaLa was jumping on the bed and singing to herself when suddenly the room went quiet. I peeked my head out of the bathroom to see my toddler staring back at me with the remote in her hand.

I groaned her name and snatched the remote out of her hand then looked at the screen.

It had switched over to the "Chill" channel, calming music filled the room as I turned to look at my little girl.

The powers that be had another idea about my afternoon, it was a hint.

So.... I did, we curled up on the bed and enjoyed the rare weekday quiet time.

If today was the last day......

Have you found the person that you would be lost without if they died?
Do you ever wonder what you would do if you left this world and left your family behind?

I am sure we all have, we all wonder and hope that our little ones that are left behind are in good hands.

My friend Natalie from natalie’s sentiments talked about the death of a loving father in a family full of girls over the past month. He left behind six daughters… six beautiful daughters are now without a father.

That brings me to my thoughts, what would I do in her shoes? Dave and I spoke about this in bed last night, curled up around each other. I would not only lose Dave, I’d lose Jake. Even if Dave and I got married I’d still lose out on his son, the little boy that I’ve already started calling … one of the seven of my kids.

And Issa and LaLa would lose out on a man they’ve started calling Da… someone that gets hugs from them as he leaves for work. LaLa is slowly wrapping him around her finger and suddenly he’d be gone.

I can’t imagine what the family is going through, did they do/say everything they wanted to before it happened? Did they put down the laundry so they could lie in bed and talk, or forgo a healthy dinner so they could have a family movie night with pizza and popcorn?

If you could know today that your loved one would be gone tomorrow, what would you do?
